When to go and what is in season
Lyon food calendar: month by month → What is in season, what to eat and the food festivals each month.
Why these months
Lonely Planet (Sep 2024): great year-round; Sep-Nov is wine harvest season (Salon des Vignerons Independants in Oct, Beaujolais Nouveau in Nov); Apr-Jul is the busiest and liveliest period; August has fewer crowds and easier reservations but intense heat and many businesses close; Fete des Lumieres (around Dec 8) brings about a third of the year's tourists at once, book months ahead; May and October are the rainiest months. Source does not label shoulder season; peak/shoulder is our reading, and Apr-Jul crowds are why it is listed as shoulder not peak.
Food events
- Beer festival Apr Late April (Lonely Planet)
- Street food festival Jun June (Lonely Planet)
- Salon des Vignerons Independants Oct October (Lonely Planet)
- Beaujolais Nouveau Nov Third weekend of November (Lonely Planet wording)
Closures to plan around
- Many businesses close for August; always check opening hours in advance (Lonely Planet). Example: bouchon Daniel & Denise closed for summer 24 Jul-20 Aug 2026 and open Mon-Fri only (Lyon tourism trade site)
Meal costs and tipping (EUR)
- Casual: lunch formule about 20-21 (Daniel & Denise 21; Vieux Lyon carte Lyonnaise set menu 19.90 per Lonely Planet diary, undated)
- Mid-range: bouchon dinner 25-40, often prix fixe (chasingwhereabouts); seasonal menu 41 at Daniel & Denise
