Chef Amazing picks: where to eat in Taipei
Taipei is a city to eat small and cheap, with one very serious Cantonese room to balance it: braised pork rice, xiaolongbao, beef noodles and gua bao, plus Le Palais for the splurge. The discoveries are neighbourhood shops in Wanhua, Zhongshan and Gongguan, several carrying Bib Gourmand listings.
The well-known five
Le Palais
Taipei Main Station area (Palais de Chine Hotel)
Michelin 3★ (2026)Cantonese fine dining$$$$
Order: Chef's Cantonese menus (sources name no individual dishes).
Taiwan's first three-Michelin-star restaurant, in the Palais de Chine Hotel at Taipei Main Station, and it kept three stars in the 2026 guide announced 21 July 2026. Cantonese cooking under chef Ken Chan.
Best for: celebration dinner · Reserve: book well ahead
Palais de Chine Hotel, Taipei (street address not confirmed in sources)
Order: Pork xiaolongbao (basket of 8 about NT$240), crab roe version in autumn, spicy shrimp and pork wontons, fried rice with pork chop.
The first Din Tai Fung, opened 1972, older and smaller than the later branches, and described as a pilgrimage stop for serious fans. Taipei Tourism's guide to xiaolongbao, updated September 2026, still treats it as the benchmark.
Best for: xiaolongbao classic · Reserve: expect a wait; use the queue ticket
Xinyi Road, Taipei (original 1972 shop; street number not confirmed in sources)
Order: Beef noodles with half meat, half tendon; wheat gluten and a green vegetable side; chili paste in the broth.
Beef noodles on Bade Road: a large bowl is 240 TWD and a normal one about 170. A long-running Taipei beef noodle address, though the best source for it is a 2015 post last modified in 2024.
Best for: beef noodle lunch · Reserve: walk-in · Hours: Mon-Sat from 11:00 (closing time listed as 6:00 in source, likely 18:00; confirm)
Michelin Bib Gourmand (year not confirmed)Taiwanese snack, gua bao$
Order: Half-lean, half-fatty braised pork gua bao (add nuts or coriander); corn soup; four-herb soup.
Soft steamed buns with braised pork, about US$3, with a seated option that skips the take-out line. Reviewers complain about peak-hour waits; airial lists a Michelin Bib Gourmand.
Best for: cheap bun and soup · Reserve: walk-in; cash only · Hours: Open until 10pm (full week not found)
Michelin Bib Gourmand (per Jan 2026 roundup)Taiwanese, braised pork rice$
Order: 'Black Gold' braised pork rice; steamed minced pork with pickles in broth.
A night-market stall with a Michelin Bib Gourmand listing, at Huaxi Street rather than the bigger Shilin or Raohe markets. Listed on a January 2026 Bib Gourmand roundup.

Food walking tour
Yongkang Street from Dongmen: a Taipei morning of queues and dumplings
Scallion nougat crackers, a flaky pancake, scones, the original Din Tai Fung counter, beef noodles and shaved ice.
Start 9:00 at Dongmen MRT Station, Exit 5 (red Tamsui-Xinyi Line), then walk down Yongkang StreetTime 4 hoursDistance about 1.8 kmBest days Any day works for all six stops on file; weekdays are quieter. Din Tai Fung's hours differ slightly on weekends, so worth confirming.
Yongkang Street is packed with small food counters in a few blocks, all reachable from Dongmen Station. The route is timed for the one queue that is quietest at opening, then goes through a street pancake, a scone, the original dumpling counter, beef noodles and shaved ice.
↓ 6 min · 450 m on foot (approx.): Walk to the end of Yongkang Street, near Dongmen Station; distance estimated, not measured.
4
Din Tai Fung (original Xinyi Road shop)
Classic Xinyi / Da'an
Order: Pork xiaolongbao, a basket of 8 (about NT$240); crab roe version in autumn.
The first Din Tai Fung, from 1972 per Taipei Tourism. One 2026 guide says this branch is now takeout only, with a sit-down restaurant a short walk away.
Around 11:15 · 30 min · about NT$240 per basket of 8
Pacing: Order one pancake and one basket per two people. If full by the beef noodles, share one bowl of liang mian and go straight to shaved ice.
Plan B: If Din Tai Fung's takeout-only counter does not suit you, or in heavy rain, swap in Hang Zhou Xiao Long Bao (No. 19, Hangzhou South Road, Section 2) for a separate dumpling meal, or Jin Feng Lu Rou Fan (No. 10, Section 1, Roosevelt Road; 8am to 1am daily per a 2024 blog).
Avoid: School finishing time and weekend lunch, when the shaved ice shop is busiest.
Bring: Cash (L'Atelier Lotus is cash only), and an empty stomach; leave the bag-heavy errands for later.
Skip it if: You want a night-market route: this is a daytime street.
Ends at: Smoothie House, Yongkang Street.
Walking times and distances are approximate, and opening hours change: confirm before you go.

Lin Dong Fang
Zhongshan / Zhongxiao Fuxing · $
Order: Beef noodles with tendon, dried tofu side
Aromatic broth and chewy noodles, open until 3 AM.
Lonely Planet: best overall Mar-May and Oct-Nov (comfortable, foliage; ~19-22C in April); June-August hot, humid (>30C) with monsoon rains Jun-Sep and peak temperatures/crowds Jul-Aug; winter Nov-Mar cooler (13-18C), fewer visitors, but Lunar New Year (late Jan) is a poor time to visit because restaurants and shops close. LP labels Mar-May and Oct-Nov 'shoulder' and Jun-Aug 'peak'; my peak/shoulder/avoid mapping flips these to mean best-to-worst. Typhoon season not covered in the fetched excerpt, so September's 'avoid' placement is my inference (monsoon to September per LP).
