The three-star tables
How to book and eat well in Portugal
- Fine-dining and popular rooms recommend reservations (for example Noélia in Tavira and Vila Joya in Albufeira per one guide).
- Some small seafood places are walk-in only; arrive early.
- Some tascas take phone reservations only and Portuguese helps.
- Many restaurants close one or two days a week; check opening days.
Etiquette
- Couvert (bread, olives, spreads, cheese) is brought unasked and is not free: you pay for what you eat, usually about €2 to €5. Say 'não, obrigado' to decline; the price should be on the menu.
- Tipping is appreciated, not mandatory: round up or leave about 5-10% in cash for good service; around 15% is very generous at high-end restaurants. Counter-service places do not expect tips.
- Service charges are not standard but some tourist-focused restaurants add them for groups of six or more; check the bill.
- Tap water is safe, but you usually must ask for it as restaurants offer bottled first.
- Lunch is roughly 12:30-15:00 and often has a prato/menu do dia at about €10-15 (soup, main, drink, coffee).
- Dinner kitchens open around 19:30, but locals usually start after 20:00, often closer to 21:00.
Eating by season
- Summer. Grilled sardines peak around June (Santo António in Lisbon, São João in Porto); vinho verde is a hot-weather drink.
- Winter. Caldo verde suits cooler evenings.
- Drinks across the country. Vinho verde: From the Minho region in the north; light, crisp, lightly sparkling, pairs with seafood; white, red and rosé exist. Popular in hot months; Port: From the Douro Valley, alcohol around 20 per cent; styles include ruby, tawny and vintage. Lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia offer tastings; Douro wines: The Douro Valley is near Porto and is described as appealing to wine connoisseurs; Ginjinha: Sour cherry liqueur served in small shot glasses; a Lisbon favourite, also associated with Óbidos, where it is served in chocolate cups; Porto Tonico: Cocktail of white port, tonic water and mint; Coffee names: Bica in Lisbon, cimbalino in Porto; galão is weak coffee with lots of hot milk; pingado is espresso with a drop of milk; Super Bock: Light lager brewed in Porto
