San Francisco holds four Michelin three-stars after Californios became the first Mexican restaurant to earn the rating in 2026. Beyond the tasting rooms, the city eats well at taquerias, Chinatown cafes and counters that have barely changed in decades.

Pork buns and rice rolls in Chinatown, a pork chop plate, then a cable car to the Swan counter.
Start 8:30 at Good Mong Kok Bakery, 1039 Stockton StTime 4.5 hoursDistance about 4.4 kmBest days Monday to Saturday. Swan Oyster Depot is closed Sunday.
A Chinatown morning of takeout buns, rice rolls and dim sum, a 1909 pork-chop house, then a California Street cable car west to an 18-stool oyster counter. The Chinatown stops are all within a few blocks.
↓ 2 min · 150 m on foot (approx.): Same block of Jackson Street.

Viral / queue Nob Hill / Polk Gulch
Order: Crab Louie, oysters shucked to order and the smoked-salmon 'Sicilian sashimi'.
Eighteen marble stools, no reservations and cash only. Lunch runs about $40-70.

Around 12:15 · 60 min · About $40-70 at lunch
1517 Polk St, San Francisco
Hours: Mon-Sat 08:00 to mid-afternoon; closed Sunday
Pacing: Chinatown is four small shares, not four meals: one bite each at stops 1 to 4 and save the real appetite for Swan. Skip the pork chop plate if you want a bigger Swan lunch.
Plan B: If the Swan line is too long, go to Sotto Mare in North Beach for oysters and Crab Louis (hours worth confirming). If it rains, the Chinatown stops are mostly indoors; Good Mong Kok is takeout only.
Avoid: Sunday, and arriving at Swan after late morning when the line is long.
Bring: Cash: New Lun Ting and Swan are cash only. A jacket for the cable car, and an appetite that you pace.
Skip it if: You want burritos, the Ferry Building or a tasting menu: this route stays in Chinatown and Polk.
Ends at: Swan Oyster Depot, 1517 Polk St, Nob Hill / Polk Gulch.

Time Out SF (May 2018, old): early fall (Sept-Oct) is the warmest and sunniest, spring a close second with fog; summer (June-Aug) is the coolest, windiest, foggiest season ('San Francisco's coldest season'); winter mild and rainy. Crowds peak in early fall. No price data in any source. Only one old source supports this field; month numbers are our mapping of the prose, and 'avoid' summer is weather-based, not crowd-based.

Meal costs and tipping (USD)
Tipping: Cities Insider: 18-22% (bill section says 18-20%) on pre-tax food and drink; many restaurants add 18-20% for parties of 6+; some (reportedly Zazie, The Progress, State Bird Provisions) use a 20% service charge instead of tipping. SF Mandate surcharge of roughly 4-10% (5-7% per Cities Insider; SF Standard 2022: about 4-10%) funds employee health care and is not a tip. Sales tax 8.625% (SF Standard 2022) or 'nearly 9%' (Cities Insider). Other surcharges, e.g. a 10% dine-in fee at Che Fico, appear (2022). No sourced meal price ranges.
