Asheville is a mountain town in western North Carolina with a small, chef-driven food scene that the Michelin Guide American South recognized in 2025 and again in October 2026. The best-known names are Indian street food at Chai Pani, tapas at Cúrate, arepas at Little Chango and pastry at Mother, all close to downtown and the South Slope. Hurricane Helene hit the River Arts District hard in September 2024, so check that any place there is open before you go.

Asheville has no Michelin stars, so the picks are the places the guide and the James Beard Awards keep naming: tapas, Indian street food, arepas and a bakery near downtown, then a biscuit counter, a fish fry and a grill house.

Food walking tour
South Slope to Pack Square: a pastry-to-tapas walk
A Bib Gourmand pastry, arepas, a catfish basket, chocolate on Pack Square and tapas on Biltmore Avenue.
Start 10:00 at Mother, 244 Short Coxe Ave, South SlopeTime 8.5 hoursDistance about 2.0 kmBest days Thursday to Saturday, when every stop is open (Little Chango is closed Sunday and Monday, Good Hot Fish is closed Mondays).
The South Slope and downtown sit on higher ground and were not the parts of Asheville that Helene flooded, so this walk avoids the River Arts District, where many places are still closed or rebuilding. Start with pastry at a Bib Gourmand bakery, eat arepas and a fried catfish basket on the Slope, walk up to Pack Square for chocolate, and finish with tapas.
Crazes move fast. “Just spotted” means one report so far, and most entries rest on a single source: confirm hours and expect a wait.
