Austin eats smoked brisket from trailers and pits, breakfast tacos on fresh flour tortillas, and queso by the bowl. It now has seven Michelin-starred restaurants, but most of the best eating is cheap: a taco truck, a kolache, an East Side bakery window. The University of Texas keeps the city young and hungry, and the barbecue lines are part of the trip.

Food walking tour
East Austin by foot: masa, tacos, brisket and a kolache
A masa cafe, a 1962 tortilla kitchen, Franklin's brisket, a Michelin taco truck and a kolache with a beer.
Start 7:30 at Mercado Sin Nombre, 408 N Pleasant Valley Rd, East AustinTime 6.5 hoursDistance about 6.5 kmBest days Tuesday to Saturday: Mercado Sin Nombre and Franklin are closed Mondays, and Joe's is closed Mondays too.
East Austin has the city's best cheap eating within a long walk. Start with coffee and a biscuit at a masa window, eat tacos on fresh flour tortillas at a family place from 1962, queue for Franklin's brisket, then cross to East 12th for Mexico City-style tacos and finish with a kolache and a beer on Manor Road.
Pacing: Eat light at Joe's: Franklin is the main meal. Share brisket by weight rather than ordering plates.
Plan B: If Franklin's line is too long, LeRoy and Lewis (south) or InterStellar (northwest) are Michelin-starred and a drive away; or preorder Franklin weeks ahead.
Avoid: Mondays, and SXSW, ACL and Formula 1 weeks, when Franklin's line runs four to five hours. In July and August start earlier and carry water.
Bring: Water, a hat, sunscreen and a folding chair for the Franklin line. Card and some cash.
Skip it if: Skip Batch if the kolaches have stopped while it becomes a brewpub; check before going.

Spring brings strawberries and wildflowers and fall brings pecans and the Austin Food + Wine Festival (Nov 6 to 8, 2026). Summer is very hot for standing in barbecue lines. Hotels fill and lines stretch for SXSW in March, ACL Fest and the Formula 1 race in October (Franklin's wait can hit four to five hours then, per a 2026 guide), UT home football Saturdays, and May graduation.
