Lawrence is the University of Kansas's town, and most of its eating happens along Massachusetts Street. Have a burger at the Burger Stand in the Casbah, pie at Ladybird Diner and a beer at Free State Brewing, which was the first legal brewery in Kansas after Prohibition. On the same block is John Brown's Underground, a 2025 James Beard semifinalist bar. Kansas City burnt ends are about 40 minutes east, but Bigg's serves them here. On Saturday mornings the farmers' market, in its 50th year in 2026, sets up a block off Mass.
