Where to eat in Newport

Newport sits at the south end of Aquidneck Island, with Thames Street and the old Bowen's and Bannister's Wharves on the harbor and the Gilded Age mansions up on Bellevue Avenue. It is a Rhode Island seafood town: clear clam chowder with clam cakes, stuffies baked with chourico, oysters and lobster rolls, then a frozen Del's or a coffee Awful Awful. The clam shacks are a short drive away in Middletown, and Tiverton Four Corners across the river has an ice cream stand that has scooped since 1923. Summer is the peak, and from about November to March many places shorten hours or close for weeks.

Clam shacks go daily from mid-May, the wharves are busiest July to September and the Mansions Wine & Food Festival runs in September. October keeps the Bowen's Wharf Seafood Festival with easier tables. In the dead of winter some waterfront rooms close for weeks and the shacks are shut.
