Where to eat in Tokyo

Tokyo has more serious restaurants per block than almost anywhere, from sushi counters seating a handful to French rooms that rival Paris. The everyday layer is just as deep: standing soba shops, onigiri counters and set-lunch spots where a great meal costs under a thousand yen.

Chef Amazing picks: where to eat in Tokyo

Tokyo's best meals are specialists doing one thing: eel, tonkatsu, soba, onigiri, sushi. This list pairs two Michelin counters with a queue-for-it eel house and cheap specialist shops, then goes to Otsuka, Naruko, Ueno and Kichijoji for the discoveries.

Pacing: The first five stops are small. Share the tofu donuts and inari, and keep the soft cream for after the sushi if you are full.

Plan B: If Yoshino is full or closed, Soba Toshimaya on Amazake Yokocho (2-4-9; tanuki soba 600 yen; Mon-Sat 11:45-16:00, closed Sunday) is the lunch swap. In rain, the lane shops are small, so keep Fuku Soba and Yoshino and shorten the middle.

Avoid: Sunday (Fuku Soba, Yanagiya, Toshimaya and Yoshino are closed). Weekends at Yanagiya, where queues are expected.

Bring: Cash and small change; Fuku Soba uses a ticket machine. Leave room for the sushi lunch.

Skip it if: You want a big market with raw fish counters, or you are travelling on a Sunday.

Ends at: Yoshino Sushi Honten, 3-8-11 Nihonbashi, Chuo (Masakichi Building 1F), reached by one short metro ride from Ningyocho.

When to go and what is in season

Tokyo food calendar: month by month → What is in season, what to eat and the food festivals each month.

Peak Mar–Apr, Oct–NovShoulder Jan–Feb, MayHard Jun–Aug
Why these months

Lonely Planet: Jan-Mar low season (cheaper, smaller crowds); Mar-May peak season (sakura late Mar-early Apr, busiest/most expensive; Golden Week in May crowded); Jun-Jul rainy season (mid-June to mid-July) and hot/humid but fewer visitors and lower prices; late Jul-Aug high heat and humidity; fall has great sightseeing weather (excerpt cut off). TableJourney calls late Oct-Nov the peak food season (matsutake, persimmons, hairy crab) and April good for sakura sweets/bamboo shoots. LP says 'no bad time'; the 'avoid' months (Jun-Aug) and the peak/shoulder split are our interpretation of weather prose, not a source verdict. Avoid 1-3 Jan for dining (most restaurants closed, TableJourney).
