No. 16The one to order
Pickled herring three ways with a shot of aquavit, then the hot fried plaice with remoulade
Lunch-only smørrebrød since 1877, in a low basement room; order the open sandwiches by ticking a paper menu, the way it has always been done.
40 min (plus egg boiling) · 6 open sandwiches, 2 to 3 people. Dense rye bread, buttered to the edges, with a heaped topping you eat with a knife and fork: herring, egg and shrimp, roast beef. Copenhagen's lunchrooms (and Vienna's little Brötchen) work on the same idea: small, neat and generous.
