Where to eat alone in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is easy alone: brown cafés where a book and a beer at the bar is the whole point, herring carts, and croquette counters built for one.

How to do it here

In a brown café, sit at the bar, not a table. Order bitterballen with your beer and nobody will rush you.

When to walk in

Late afternoon or after 10pm; it's open late and the counter turns fast

⌂ Market stalls
The seat to ask for

A stool at one of the stall counters, not the long tables

When to walk in

Weekday lunch or early evening; weekends get loud

Get: Bitterballen from De Ballenbar, then whatever the stall next to you is frying

Twenty-odd stalls under one roof in an old tram depot, so you can graze three small things instead of committing to one big plate.

★ Chef's counter
The seat to ask for

A seat at the teppanyaki counter, facing the chef

When to walk in

Tuesday to Saturday evenings; book a single seat a week or two ahead

Get: The teppanyaki menu with the Wagyu

At a teppanyaki counter the chef cooks for you alone, so a table for one is a front-row seat, not a consolation.
