Thin wrappers, juicy filling, and they cook in a few minutes from frozen. The base for a five-minute dumpling soup that tastes like a Seoul lunch counter.

A freezer staple at H Mart and most Korean markets, and in big bags at Costco and most supermarkets.

    Mandu-guk: a five-minute dumpling soup with egg

Korean dumpling soup (mandu-guk) is a weeknight classic. Broth, dumplings, an egg swirled in at the end and a little sesame. Frozen dumplings were made for it.

    You need

    • 12 Bibigo Steamed Pork & Vegetable Dumplings, frozen
    • 4 cups (950 ml) chicken or beef broth
    • 1 tbsp soy sauce (Korean soup soy sauce if you have it)
    • 1 garlic clove, grated
    • 1 large egg, beaten
    • 2 scallions, sliced
    • 1 tsp toasted sesame oil
    • 1 sheet roasted seaweed (gim), cut into strips, and black pepper

    How to make it

    1. Bring the broth, soy sauce and garlic to a boil in a medium pot.
    2. Drop in the frozen dumplings and simmer 5 to 6 minutes, until they float and the wrappers turn translucent.
    3. Stir the soup in a slow circle and drizzle in the beaten egg. Leave it 20 seconds so it sets into soft ribbons.
    4. Taste and add a pinch of salt or more soy sauce.
    5. Ladle into bowls and finish with the scallions, sesame oil, seaweed strips and black pepper.
