Gluten-free Italy

Italy is the easiest country in Europe to eat gluten free. Coeliac disease is screened for, pharmacies stock gluten-free pasta, and the Italian Coeliac Association (AIC) trains and checks restaurants. You can eat carbonara, schiacciata, tortellini, fritto misto and a sfogliatella without a second thought, if you know where.

What to know

Look for AIC

Restaurants in the Italian Coeliac Association's network are trained and checked. Its free app, AIC Mobile, lists them by town.

Pharmacies and supermarkets help

Pharmacies sell gluten-free pasta, bread and biscuits. Most supermarkets have a senza glutine shelf.

Gluten free isn't always safe

A gluten-free pizza baked in the wheat oven, or supplì from a shared fryer, isn't safe for a coeliac. Ask how it's cooked.

Watch out for

Going somewhere else in Italy?

Ask Chef. He'll find the coeliac-safe places in any town, and save them to your trip.

Ask ChefCook gluten free at home

How Chef checks: every place here says it on its own site, or a coeliac writer or diners who ate there do, and we link which. Checked November 6, 2026. Photos are each place's own food, credited. Kitchens change: if it's coeliac disease, say so every time. No place paid to be here.

Chef Amazing remembers every place you ate, keeps the lists friends send you, and helps you cook it at home.
