    Classic Cheddar Pierogies

    Mrs. T's

Potato and cheddar dumplings that taste like a Polish grandmother's when you do what she did: brown them in butter with a lot of onions and serve with sour cream and dill.

Made in Pennsylvania since 1952 and in the freezer aisle of nearly every American supermarket.

The box saysBoil 5 to 7 minutes, or sauté from frozen.

    Make it taste homemade

Pierogies with brown butter, onions and dill

Boiling first and finishing in a hot pan gives soft insides and golden, crisp edges. The onions cook in the same butter while the water boils.

    You need

    • 1 box (16 oz / 450 g) Mrs. T's Classic Cheddar Pierogies, frozen
    • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
    • 1 large yellow onion, halved and thinly sliced
    • Kosher salt and black pepper
    • 1/2 cup (120 g) sour cream
    • 2 tbsp chopped fresh dill (or chives)

    How to make it

    1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
    2. Meanwhile melt 2 tbsp butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and a pinch of salt and cook, stirring now and then, 10 minutes, until soft and golden.
    3. Boil the frozen pierogies 4 to 5 minutes, until they float, then drain well.
    4. Push the onions to one side, add the last 1 tbsp butter, and lay the pierogies flat in the pan. Cook 2 minutes a side, until golden brown.
    5. Toss with the onions, season with pepper, and serve with the sour cream and dill.

Chef's own upgrade, in our words. Save it and it opens in Chef Amazing with a timeline, the prep laid out and what you already have.
