Gluten-free Porto

Eating gluten free here: Take care

Porto takes some care for coeliacs: only a few fully gluten-free places, but one of them makes a gluten-free francesinha, and a handful of kitchens know exactly what celíaco means.

What to ask
Sou celíaco. Não posso comer glúten, nem vestígios. Este prato é preparado sem contaminação cruzada?

I'm coeliac. I can't eat gluten, not even traces. Is this dish made with no cross-contamination?

Where to eat

100% gluten free

The whole kitchen is gluten free. Order anything.

Coeliac-careful kitchen

Not a gluten-free kitchen, but trained for coeliacs: accredited, a separate fryer or a separate menu with real protocols.

Get: The Spanish tortilla

In the tiled São Bento station. Our source's server walked her through the menu and checked with the kitchen, which turned down a dish it couldn't make safely that day. Book.

Good gluten-free options

Plenty you can eat and staff who get it, in a kitchen that also uses flour. Say it's coeliac, not a preference.

Before you go

Fewer fully gluten-free places than Lisbon.

Plan meals around the few on this list and talk to the staff everywhere else.

Say eu sou celíaco.

Celíaca for a woman. Most restaurant staff know what it means. Ask if bread is toasted separately, if fries have their own fryer, and if the grill is clean.

Grilled fish is a good bet.

Fresh fish grilled with only salt, like in the Afurada fishing village across the river, is usually safe. Ask about seasonings.

Read the label.

Sem glúten or isento de glúten means gluten free. Allergens are in bold. Watch for farinha, trigo, centeio, cevada and aveia. Continente, Pingo Doce and Auchan have snacks.

How Chef checks: every place here says it on its own site, or a coeliac writer who ate there does, and we link which. We checked on October 29, 2026. Kitchens change, staff change: if it's coeliac disease, say so every time. Photos marked "a photo like it" aren't of that place. No place paid to be here.

Chef Amazing remembers every place you ate, keeps the lists friends send you, and helps you cook it at home.
